Sunday Sparring – 12th November 2017

Sunday sparring was in Reading this past Sunday, with a good turnout of students.

These free sessions for students  who have passed their safety test allow them to get in some valuable sparring time, practising the techniques they’ve learnt in our training sessions.  It allows them to spar with people they don’t normally train with as well as try out some fun weapon combinations that are not part of our curriculum.

Godalming Training – 8th November 2017

There was a very large turnout of students in Godalming on Wednesday night as our students turned up in force for a sparring night.

Whilst Fran worked with the beginners progressing towards their safety test, the rest engaged in an evening of free-sparring practising the techniques they’ve learnt in our training sessions.

Reading Training – 6th November 2017

On Monday, our students gathered in Reading for our regular training session.

Emilia continued her work with the rapier group on guarding against cuts, Jay took the Bolognese group and Stewart worked with the students progressing towards their safety test.

School Of The Sword Sees Success At Swordfish In Sweden

Five of our students travelled to Gothenburg, Sweden to take part in the Swordfish tournament this past weekend.

Generally considered one of the premier events in the world, Swordfish draws the best HEMA fencers from around the globe in what is an ever-increasingly-difficult tournament.  Students represented the school brilliantly in the rapier & dagger competition, and Alexander Makarov managed to secure a bronze medal in the Longsword competition.  Congratulations Sasha!

Godalming Training – 1st November 2017

Students gathered in Godalming last Wednesday for our weekly training session.

As always there were multiple streams on offer:  Beginners working towards their safety test so they can then spar with other students, Bolognese working on sword & buckler, as well as rapier & dagger.

Our Reading students were joined by a guest instructor on Monday night.  Emilia Skirmuntt took our rapier students through dealing with cuts.

Meanwhile Stewart worked with the beginners working towards their safety test and Jay worked with the bolognese group.

Wessex League Reading might have only been the day before but with both Broadwater Bucklerthon and Swordfish tournaments looming, students took the opportunity to turn up in Godalming on Sunday morning to get in some extra sparring.

The School Of The Sword Collects Medal Haul At Wessex League Reading

Saturday saw the latest leg of the new Wessex league tournament in Reading where a large number of the School of the Sword students took part.    The Wessex League is a series of tournaments aimed at all HEMA practitioners that want to experience competition for the first time or to step up their game. It has the format of international HEMA competition while remaining accessible and friendly.

Members of the school performed well in competition, with us taking away a number of medals and continuing to be ranked a very solid first in the team competition.
