New Conditioning Sessions For Students

2015-11-30T10:42:14+00:00November 30th, 2015|Fitness, Godalming, Reading|

A number of students have been saying that they’d like to increase their personal fitness.  Sword play (even drills) whilst dressed in a mask and heavy gear can really take it out of you.  Chris has kindly organised a conditioning session on Thursday.  It’s open to all students (whether you’ve passed your safety test or not) and will last 55 minutes.

The first session will be held on Thursday December 3rd at Sandhurst Sports Centre starting at 7:30pm sharp!.

If you are interested in attending please let Chris know via the Facebook group

Sparring – 28th November 2015

2015-11-29T00:42:37+00:00November 29th, 2015|Dagger, Godalming, Rapier, Reading|

Saturday saw our monthly sparring session for studenti.  We had a number of people turn up for a bit of extra practise where the weapons we fought with included rapiers, daggers, cloaks, sideswords, a case of swords, knives, tomahawks and shashka.

Pim was given a proper shark tank for his birthday with a fight for every one of his years.  However, by the end of it, we all seemed more exhausted than him!

Lots of rapier and dagger students joined us tonight, some from our Monday’s Reading class. The focus was on dealing with counters – lots to think about and put into practice at sparring this weekend.

The candidati continued to polish Marozzo’s first play for sword and buckler.

Reading Training – 23rd November 2015

2015-11-28T23:16:50+00:00November 28th, 2015|Dagger, Rapier, Reading, Sword & Buckler|

We had to split up at late notice on Monday after we were notified that the rooms the seniors and intermediates were using were starting their refurbishment early.  A quick bit of last minute organisation, and whilst the beginners continued with sword and buckler at Rivermead Leisure Centre, the Seniors and Intermediates were over the other side of town at Park United Reform Church.

There the seniors joined in with the sidesword lessons of the intermediates where Jay had us practising footwork.  Another great night and well done to all who helped sort out a last minute venue.  Thanks to David for taking the photos!

URGENT: Reading Venue Updates For Seniors And Intermediates

2015-11-23T19:08:37+00:00November 22nd, 2015|Reading|

Rivermead Leisure Centre has started their studio refurbishment program early which means we will no longer have access to the wellness studio. The dance studio isn’t going to be big enough for both groups so we are unfortunately going to have to run the senior & intermediate groups in a different venue to the beginners for the next few weeks.

Beginners will stay at Rivermead Leisure Centre in the Thames suite.  If you’ve just started training with Fran, turn up as per normal (there’s no change for you!  Just don’t be worried when some of the seniors don’t start turning up as usual)

Intermediate and Senior group will EITHER be in the main hall at Park United Reform Church. (Now Confirmed!)  For a map check out the events section, but be aware of the one-way system!

This is likely to be the situation until the end of the year after which we’re hoping all groups will come back to together in our new venue (new venue 80% confirmed).

Please note that Broadwater school are in the process of increasing their security so after December 7th 2015 we will only be able to get in through the school reception entrance between 7.55 and 8.05.

If you arrive after this time you will need to enter the building via the sports centre reception.

TL;DR Don’t be late for class.

Reading Training – 16th November 2015

2015-11-17T11:11:05+00:00November 17th, 2015|Dagger, Rapier, Reading, Sword & Buckler|

Another busy night tonight with the different groups splitting into 3 different rooms once we were taken through an excellent new warm up by Chris that had us shooing chickens.

The beginners group continued their foundation work and were rewarded for all their hard work with some of the seniors coming in to showcase some sparring to them.  The intermediate group continued with sword and buckler, a couple of them joining the seniors for some sparring at the end.  Finally, the seniors continued their work on Fabris rapier & dagger, focusing on proceeding with resolution.

Everyone seemed to have a lot of fun and there were lots of reports of progress being made!  See everyone next week!

We were in another hall at the school tonight due to a one-off school event in our usual one.

The beginners group continued to work toward their safety test whilst the seniors had chance to admire Ian’s new headgear before making progress with rapier and dagger!

Reading Training – 9th November 2015

2015-11-17T09:13:25+00:00November 17th, 2015|Dagger, Rapier, Reading, Sword & Buckler|

Wow, what an incredible night we had in Reading!

We took in an influx of new beginners bringing our total number to 42 for the evening.  They started with the basics that will be the foundation they will build upon.

In the intermediates, Andy and Chris both passed their safety test.  Congratulations to both of them.

The seniors continued to work on proceeding with resolution but found time to give recently safety-test-passed James his first experience of fencing with steel.

A great night was had by everyone and there was a real buzz as everyone left.  Thanks to Mark, Chris & Paul for taking photos of the night!
