It was the final lessons in the current teaching blocks on Wednesday evening in Godalming.   Our senior students will be starting new streams next week.  In Lizzie’s Montante group, students put together everything they’ve learned over the past few weeks to do some half-speed sparring.  Meanwhile, in Pim’s rapier & dagger stream, he worked on giving some individual feedback whilst the rest of the students played with a variety of weapon combinations.   Fran worked on getting the beginners group ready for their safety tests.

We were also joined by Jessica who is visiting the country from Holland, where she studies HEMA

Cloaks Are Back In Fashion

2016-04-25T16:02:52+00:00April 27th, 2016|Godalming, Rapier, Reading|

Always a leader in HEMA sartorial fashion*, the School of the Sword have declared cloaks back in fashion as they recently took delivery of their new school cloaks ahead of a future training block on rapier & cloak.  There is no truth to the rumour that one SOTS member and champion fencer wore his whilst going to the cash machine on his way to a recent sparring day!

*Well not really, unless you count wearing black

The International Rapier Seminar might only have been last week but on Sunday afternoon a number of our students came together to engage in some free-sparring / tournament practise.

There was a lot of intense practise before a well-earned refreshment break at the local pub.

Godalming Training – 20th April 2016

2016-04-21T21:02:35+00:00April 21st, 2016|Dagger, Godalming, Rapier|

There were flying penguins at Godalming on Wednesday night!  The Montante group was looking at dealing with thrown objects, and because throwing a sword might not be the safest thing to do, it was substituted for a stuffed penguin.  It produced a lot of laughs and worked as an effective drill.

Over in the rapier & dagger group, Pim lead students through some tournament scenarios resulting in some high intensity bouts.  Meanwhile the beginners continued their work toward their safety test

Less than 24 hours after the end of the International Rapier Seminar our students were back training at Reading on Monday.

The senior students decided to use the session to share knowledge with each other that they gained from attending various workshops over the weekend.  The beginners, meanwhile, progressed onto stepping whilst cutting to a target.

School of the Sword In National Press

The i newspaper has written a very nice piece about School of the Sword, tying it into the upcoming  start of season 6 of Game of Thrones on television.  There are interviews with a number of our members and a nice focus on the fact that sword fighting is for young or old, male or female.

You can check it out here: https://inews.co.uk/essentials/culture/television/game-thrones-inspires-people-take-sword-lessons/
