The School of the Sword Sees Success In Bath

The School of the Sword came away with a number of new medals at the Bath Chapter of the Wessex League this past weekend.

The Wessex League is a series of tournaments aimed at all HEMA practitioners that want to experience competition for the first time or to step up their game. It has the format of international HEMA competition while remaining accessible and friendly.

The School of the Sword continues to do well in the team competition after coming away with another 4 medals

  • Fran Terminiello – Gold Women’s Longsword, Silver Women’s Sabre
  • Kasten Harris – Gold Open Rapier & Dagger
  • Apollon Makropoulos – Silver Open Rapier & Dagger
  • Matthew Crane – Bronze Open Rapier & Dagger

Godalming Training – 22nd November 2017

Last Wednesday our students gathered in Godalming for our regular training session.

Fran worked with the beginners progressing towards their safety test, Kasten worked with the Bolognese group and Matt took the rapier group through some rapier & cloak.

Another Studente Passes Safety Test

Jonathan is the latest of our students to pass his safety test and join the ranks of our Studenti.

In order to pass the safety test students must demonstrate control, efficacy and knowledge of the cuts and guards of bolognese swordplay.

Jonathan will now be able to progress to taking part in many of our other training streams as well as full sparring.

Reading Training – 20th November 2017

Monday night saw our regular training session in Reading with multiple streams of training on offer.

Stewart worked with the beginner’s progressing towards their safety test, Emilia continued her work with the rapier group, and Jay worked with the bolognese group on some sidesword and rotella.

Broadwater Bucklerthon – 18th November 2017

Saturday saw The School of the Sword host their second annual Broadwater Bucklerthon

Bucklerthon is an informal sword and buckler tournament aimed at people that have yet to reach a quarter final in any weapon, who compete in a nylon open.  In addition there is a steel invitational.  The event was a success, with participation from overseas.  Congratulations to all the medal winners listed below.

Another busy night in Godalming on Wednesday with three streams of training available for our students.

Kasten worked with the Bolognese group, whilst Pim taught the rapier stream and Fran worked with the beginners progressing towards safety test.

Reading Sees More Students Pass Safety Test

Last Monday night saw the addition of two new studenti after both Tom and Claire passed their safety test and risen from the rank of Candidati.

After many weeks of hard work learning, Tom & Clare have shown that they have understood the foundations of swordplay and are now ready to engage in a wider range of training as a Studente.

Congratulations to the pair of them.

Emilia continued her work with the rapier group on guarding against cuts, Jay took the Bolognese group and Stewart worked with the students progressing towards their safety test.

Sunday Sparring – 12th November 2017

Sunday sparring was in Reading this past Sunday, with a good turnout of students.

These free sessions for students  who have passed their safety test allow them to get in some valuable sparring time, practising the techniques they’ve learnt in our training sessions.  It allows them to spar with people they don’t normally train with as well as try out some fun weapon combinations that are not part of our curriculum.

There was a very large turnout of students in Godalming on Wednesday night as our students turned up in force for a sparring night.

Whilst Fran worked with the beginners progressing towards their safety test, the rest engaged in an evening of free-sparring practising the techniques they’ve learnt in our training sessions.
