Reading Adds More Studenti

2016-12-19T11:07:09+00:00December 11th, 2016|Reading|

The School of the Sword has a long record of producing excellent fighters.  A large part of this owes itself to the fact that we spend a long time on the fundamentals.  When new students join us as candidati they spend many weeks learning the cuts and guards of Bolognese swordsplay, demonstrating control and efficacy.  Only when they are ready do we put them through the safety test where they pass to the rank of Studente and can partake in our main training streams.

It takes some work and dedication to reach that stage so naturally, we’re very proud when we see students progress.

Congrats to Dave, Kip and Steven for being the latest additions to the Studenti

The School of the Sword In The Press Again

2016-12-10T10:41:24+00:00December 10th, 2016|Press|

Our exploits at the recent Reading Comic Con made it onto the GetReading website.  Reporting on the event we not only featured in their gallery (where we get called the Swordsman School for some reason – we can assure everyone we have a whole spectrum of genders in the school) but also in a little video as well.

Thanks to everyone who came and helped as well as the members of the public who came and watched us fight and asked us a load of great questions!

Reading Adds Two Further Studenti

2016-12-08T22:39:27+00:00December 8th, 2016|Reading|

It’s that time of year where many of our candidati who started back at the end of summer have reached the stage where they are ready to take their safety test.

The safety test is an in-house examination where the student must demonstrate control, efficacy and knowledge of the cuts and guards of bolognese swordplay.  Only upon passing this will our candidati rise to the rank of studente where they will be able to partake in our other streams of training leading to full sparring.

Jake and James are the latest of our Reading candidati to pass the test and rise to the rank of studente.  Congratulations to both of them for putting in such hard work and dedication

Reading Training – 5th December 2016

2016-12-07T11:04:40+00:00December 7th, 2016|Rapier, Reading, Sword & Buckler|

Our rapier stream really got into the spirit of rapier & cloak on Monday night.  Aside from being pictures of Renaissance sartorial elegance they found time for Matt to guide them through a number of plays using the cloak as a companion weapon with very effective results.

Meanwhile, Pim took the Bolognese group through hitting deep targets and Stewart worked with the beginners working towards their safety test.

Godalming Adds Two New Studenti

2016-12-07T10:57:53+00:00December 5th, 2016|Godalming|

We never tire of seeing our students progress.  It’s a sign of their hard work and dedication.  When students start as Candidati with The Sword of the School they spend many weeks working on the fundamentals, getting a solid foundation that will carry them forward as they progress through the school.   To become one of our Studenti they have to pass our safety test.

In order to pass the safety test students must demonstrate control, efficacy and knowledge of the cuts and guards of bolognese swordplay.

On Wednesday night, Sarah and Luke became the latest of our students to join the ranks of the Studente.  Congratulations to both of them!

Reading Comic Con – 26th / 27th November 2016

2016-12-02T00:42:52+00:00December 2nd, 2016|Events|

The School of the Sword was present at the first ever Reading Comic Con this past week.  Students from both our Reading and Godalming salle turned up over the two days to give demonstrations of the various weapons we train with.  Not only did it educate the public about what we do and some of the differences between the fights they see in videogames and television with what happens in reality, it also gave our students hours to get some extra practise in.

2016-11-25T00:35:34+00:00November 26th, 2016|Reading, Sword & Buckler|

It’s a busy time for our beginners groups at our Reading salle. After many weeks of hard work learning the foundations of swordplay we’re seeing a number of students ready to take the safety test that they need to pass in order to progress onto sparring and other training streams.

Congratulations to Alessandro and Tom who on Monday night became the latest members to pass their safety test and rise from the rank of Candidati to Studente.
