Reading Group
Another busy night in Reading with three streams of training on offer to our students.
Josh & Lizzie worked with the beginners on their foundations of swordplay, Simon continued his block on the use of the dagger, and Matt ran a single rapier tournament in preparation for Fightcamp.
The School of the Sword had a large presence at this weekend’s Astolat tournament with not only a bunch of medal wins but a number of students making it through to the latter stages of the various competitions, a number for the first time. There was great camaraderie throughout the whole weekend, with a number of students just turning up to support those competing or to help with judging.

It was another busy night on Monday with students participating in one of three training streams.
Lizzie and Josh took the beginners through the foundations of swordplay, Pim ran a practise tournament for the rapier & dagger students, and Simon continued with his block on the dagger, this time including the cloak!
Students gathered in Hawley on Sunday for the last sparring session before the Astolat tournament next week, which a lot of students will be participating in.
These free sessions for students allow them to get in some valuable sparring time, practising the techniques they’ve learnt in our training sessions. It also allows them to spar with people they don’t normally train with as well as try out some fun weapon combinations that are not part of our curriculum.
The School of the Sword was proud to host Luke Ireland of The Exiles for a one day seminar on the Iberian montante on Saturday.
The aim was to provide an introduction to Dom Diogo Gomes de Figueiredo’s Memorial Da Prattica do Montante. Over the course of the day, students worked on many of the simple rules included in Figueiredo’s treatise, as well as expanding upon their use beyond the confines of the rules.
It was a great day and everyone really enjoyed having Luke instruct us.
We had a guest at our training in Reading tonight in the form of Enrico Stradioli from ASD Sala d’Arme Achille Marozzo Romagna Sforzesca.
Pim took the rapier & dagger group through some tournament prep, Simon continued his block on the dagger, and Lizzie and Josh worked with the new beginners on the fundamentals of swordfighting.
At Reading on Monday we had an influx of new candidati. They’ll spend the next six weeks working with Lizzie and Josh on the fundamentals of sword play.
Meanwhile, the studenti had the option of two training streams: Pim took the rapier & dagger group through some tournament prep, whilst Simon starts his block of lessons on the dagger.
Students from both Reading & Godalming met up in Hawley this past weekend to spar. There were a number of weapon combinations in play: single sidesword, sidesword & buckler, and rapier & dagger.
