In Godalming tonight we continued our Sword and dagger block with an evening of defence at the stage drills. The longsword class looked at Meyers square and the beginner’s group looked into body mechanics with the aid of spadone.
Gradings galore at Reading tonight as Josh, Chris and Simon prepared to level up. At SOTS we have gradings at 30, 200 and 400 hours of study, the last two involving multiple fights and written pieces. Our senior students put in a huge effort, with Simon and Josh continuing their assessments this weekend at our anniversary event. Great work all!

A thoroughly sweaty and hard working session in Godalming tonight as we continued the Sword and dagger course and began the longsword block.

Godalming head instructor, Fran Lacuata was at Imperial College London today to give a HEMA taster lesson to a bunch of students.
They were introduced to sabre, sidesword and spadone and were , in Fran’s words. “all absolute champs!”
It was another busy night at Reading tonight, with students able to choose between two streams of learning.
Josh and Simon continued their work on single rapier, whilst Dan looked at Dall’agocchie’s single sidesword and how to win a fight in 30 days! (shortened to just 90 minutes!)
Students at Godalming got to enjoy the start of a new stream tonight, looking at sword and dagger. They looked at the principles of dall’Agocchie – matching the guards between the weapons; parrying with the True Edge of the dagger on the outside, and with the flats or true edge to the inside.
Sunday saw our Oxford students gather for a bit out outdoor freeplay. These sessions are always helpful. There’s only so much time during a lesson to learn a new technique and often the best way to practise it is to incorporate it into sparring.
