The School of the Sword’s impressive 2017 medal haul continues with further wins in competition this past weekend.
Representing the school at the Villeneuve HEMA Tournament in France, Alexander ‘Sasha’ Makarov managed to come away with a gold in the rapier competition and a bronze in the sword & buckler.
Sasha is having a great year having recently finished 2nd in the Rapier & Dagger Nordic League. Congratulations, Sasha. We’re sure this won’t be the last of your medals in 2017
John and Phil are the latest of our students to pass their safety test and join the ranks of our Studenti.
In order to pass the safety test students must demonstrate control, efficacy and knowledge of the cuts and guards of bolognese swordplay.
John and Phil will now be able to progress to taking part in many of our other training streams as well as full sparring.
Wednesday saw our regular Godalming training session with three streams on offer.
Simon and Kastan worked with beginners progressing towards their safety test, Adrian worked with the Bolognese group on sword & buckler, and Fran continued her lesson on introduction to single rapier.
Students gathered in Reading on Monday night for our regular training session.

Godalming played host to Sunday sparring this week. The sparring provides an ideal opportunity for students to fight people they don’t normally fight as well as put into practise techniques they have learnt during training.
There was a good mix of weapons and a lot of energy despite many of our regulars being away at competition.
Wednesday’s training session saw the addition of two new studenti after both Ben and Mikolaj passed their safety test and risen from the rank of Candidati.
After many weeks of hard work learning, Ben & Mikolaj have shown that they have understood the foundations of swordplay and are now ready to engage in a wider range of training as a Studente.
Congratulations to the pair of them.

Lizzie worked with students progressing toward their safety test, Adrian took the Bolognese group through some sword & buckler attacks and counters, whilst Fran ran an introduction to rapier session.
Our Reading students gathered for our regular Monday night training session last night with two streams of training on offer.

The School of the Sword members met up in Hawley on Sunday for an intense session of sparring. Single rapier, single sidesword, sword & buckler, and rapier & dagger were all in play.
