Our Oxford student met up again today for their regular outdoor freeplay session. These sparring get-togethers provide the perfect opportunity to practise techniques learned in class as well as get experience of fighting against opponents they might otherwise not get regular practise against.
Our Oxford students had a rare occasion to meet up today without any weapons as they enjoyed a Xmas meal together at a local pub. It’s been a fantastic year for the chapter filled with great fencing, tournaments and swords, and they are very much looking forward to welcoming new beginners in 2024.
All four chapters came together this weekend, as the final leg of the Wessex League Tournament came to Swindon, Students from our Godalming, Reading and Oxford chapters competed whilst our Swindon students got their first taste of tournaments from the sidelines, cheering everyone on.
School of the Sword came away with a number of medals despite some highly skilled competition.
Emilia Skirmuntt took gold in Women’s Rapier & Dagger, silver in Women’s longsword, as well as two golds in the overall league – Women’s longsword league and Women’s Multiple Weapon league

Congratulations to Nigel Salt who narrowly missed out on a medal, gaining 4th place in Beginner’s Longsword.
Great fencing by all fencers, whether they won medals or not. They should all be proud, as we look to 2024 and our preparations

The School of the Sword is in Switzerland this weekend, after Oxford head instructor, Emilia Skirmuntt, has been invited to present a workshop on the side-sword of Giovanni Dall’Agocchie as part of the DEON event being held in Zurich. Hosted by Swiss HEMA member HADU, DEON23 is a dedicated rapier and side-sword event that features both workshops and tournaments.
Our Reading chapter played host to a sparring day today. There were over thirty fencers there from numerous clubs and lots of great fights. If you want to up your game and test your skills against unfamiliar opponents look out for future events.
Our Oxford students met up for their regular weekly training session tonight. As always at our Oxford chapter there was a lot of focus on longsword, but there was a little sword and buckler as well.
Sunday saw our Oxford students gather for a bit out outdoor freeplay. These sessions are always helpful. There’s only so much time during a lesson to learn a new technique and often the best way to practise it is to incorporate it into sparring.
