Our Godalming salle saw in September with a good turnout on Wednesday night with our usual three streams of training.
Lizzie worked with the Bolognese group on Manciolino’s attacks from coda lunga e stretta, Fran worked with the beginners progressing toward their safety test and Pim took the Rapier & Dagger group through footwork.
It was an extremely busy night at Reading on Monday night with twenty new students starting their six week beginners course, bringing our attendance for the evening to thirty-nine. We only run these a few times a year, introducing people to the foundations of swordplay.
Whilst Matt & James started them off on their first week, Lizzie worked with the Bolognese group and Pim started a new teaching block on rapier & dagger
Wednesday saw our regular Godalming training session and despite it being holiday season there was again a great turnout.
Pim took the rapier and dagger group through some footwork drills, Lizzie took the bolognese group and Fran progressed the beginners towards their safety test.
It was an incredibly hot night at Godalming on Wednesday night, but despite the heat and thunderstorms we still saw students turn out en masse.
Pim started a new teaching block on rapier & dagger whilst Fran worked on utilising a wide range of guards when sparring with sword & buckler. Lizzie taught the beginners working towards their safety test.
We were all so exhausted by the end we decided to sit down when it came to our circle debrief at the end of the night.
It was an active night at Reading on Monday with three streams of training.
Pim took the bolognese class through some sword & buckler, whilst Matt continued his work with the rapier group on different ways to find the sword. Simon, meanwhile, worked with the beginners.
It was an interesting night for both the rapier and bolognese groups at Godalming last Wednesday when students not only got some one-to-one coaching from instructors, Pim and Fran, but also got constructive feedback from other students as well. There was a marked improvement in everyone’s fencing by the end of the night.
Lizzie, meanwhile, progressed the beginners towards their safety test.
Despite it being only 24 hours after the end of Fightcamp, Reading saw a good turnout on Monday night.
Matt took the rapier group through various binds with the sword whilst Lizzie took the Bolognese group through some sword and buckler and Simon worked with the beginners.
This past weekend, The School of the Sword ‘invaded’ Fightcamp. With over 20 members in attendance we created our very own tent city within the campsite and partook in a wide variety of workshops, classes and tournaments.
We came away with good memories, a few lost ones, new friendships, a few aches and pains, and five medals.
Sasha took gold in single rapier and bronze in both the Assault at Arms and longsword. Pim took silver in single rapier whilst Jay received silver in the Eggleton Cup. We also had a number of students make it out of the pools in a variety of disciplines.

We had a very busy class in Godalming last Wednesday, including Shanee who dropped in from California before the School of the Sword road trip to Fightcamp 2016.
We also had a visit from Robert Wrightson of Sussex Sword Academy. The evening was spent mostly prepping for tournament and we got in lots of friendly exchanges.

It was the last training night for our Reading students before heading to this weekend’s Fightcamp. The Bolognese group welcomed back guest instructor, Jonathan Middleton, going over some tactics for sword & buckler. Stewart took the rapier group through a few Giganti plays, whilst Simon worked with the beginners.
We still managed to find some time for some exchanges at the end of a very busy session.
