Sunday Sparring – 7th August 2016

Sunday sparring saw a good turnout this past weekend with a number of students wanting to get in some extra practise before the upcoming Fightcamp.

There was a lot of intense sparring for the whole two hours before retiring to the pub to top up on liquids.

Godalming Training – 3rd August 2016

A very sweaty and energetic class last Wednesday where we welcomed some new faces and old.

Bolognese worked on variety in cuts and thrusts, as well as defence. Rapier practiced against cuts and expanding repertoire. Candidati (beginners) learned bolognese cut terminology and practiced Marozzo’s first play for sword and buckler.

Reading Training – 1st August 2016

Our Reading salle had a guest instructor on Monday night in the form of Jonathan Middleton, who took our sword & buckler group through some tournament prep ahead of Fightcamp.

Over in the rapier group, there was also some tournament prep going on in the form of some judged exchanges.  Meanwhile, Simon worked with the beginners working towards their safety test.

Saturday Sparring – 30th July 2016

Taking advantage of the nice weather this past weekend, a number of students decided to get some extra sparring in by all meeting up in one of their gardens.

It was a good high-energy session with lots of good technical sparring.

Godalming Training – 27th July 2016

With our usual instructors away on holiday it was a Reading ‘dojo storm’ at last Wednesday’s Godalming Training, with a large number of students coming to help facilitate the evening as well as get in some extra practise.

Adrian and Lorcan worked with the beginners on Manciolino’s assalti and cutting to a target.  The studenti, meanwhile, kicked off the internal ladder league with a number of judged sparring bouts.

Reading Training – 25th July 2016

It was a busy night last Monday with a good level of focus and study in all three training streams.

Lorcan worked with the beginners learning Manciolino’s assalti.  Adrian took students through the last part of his buckler lessons and Stewart continued his lessons on Giganti Rapier.

Godalming Training – 20th July 2016

We had a bumper crop of nine beginners on Wednesday, along with special guest Alyssa Tan visiting from Malaysia to try sidesword for the first time.

The bolognese group worked at flow speed in this merciless heat, building up to tactics against leg cuts.

Rapier group began work on single rapier, studying attacking from distance and controlling the blade.

School of The Sword Bring Home Seven Medals From Astolat

It’s been a great weekend for our fencers competing in the Astolat HEMA Open these past couple of days culminating in the school bringing home seven medals against stiff competition.

Congratulations to the following:

  • Piermarco Terminiello – Rapier & Dagger Gold
  • Matthew Crane – Rapier & Dagger Bronze
  • Maria Makarova – Women’s Sword & Buckler Gold, Women’s Sabre Bronze
  • Alexander Makarov – Sidesword & Buckler Gold, Arming Sword & Buckler Silver
  • Jay Maxwell – Sidesword & Buckler Bronze

Also an honourable mention to Chris Hartley who narrowly missed out on a medal after losing to Jay in the Sidesword & Buckler finals.

Everyone (whether they came away with medals or not) had a great weekend and hope that the event will become a regular addition to the tournament calendar.

Good First Day At Astolat Tournament – 16th July 2016

This weekend HEMA fencers from across the world have gathered in the UK for the Astolat tournament.  School of the Sword students have competed in a number of disciplines.

Against a very high standard of fencing, a number of students have progressed to quarter finals in Rapier & Dagger, and Sword & Buckler which will take place on Sunday.

Congratulations and best of luck to Pim, Matt, Jay, Lynette, Chris. Sasha and Maria.

With Astolat taking place this weekend, studenti at our Godalming Salle put the evening to good use by doing some tournament practise by way of some judged exchanges.  We were joined by special guest and renowned fencer, Kristofer Stanson.

Meanwhile, Lizzie worked with the beginners on the foundations of sword fighting, progressing them towards their safety test.
